Developing A Christ-Like Attitude

The New Testament book of Philippians explains the attitude, mindset and outlook we as believers must have if we want to experience the joy of the Lord.  As we know quite well, the world we live in is full of difficult and confused people.  This isn’t an easy place to live.  Thank goodness this life is just temporary until the day our glorious Lord returns for us.

The Apostle Paul writes in vs. 1:27 that we are to “live as citizens of heaven, conducting ourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.”  Paul instructs us to be different than the world.  He tells us to,

“…live clean, innocent lives as children of God in a dark world full of crooked and perverse people.  Let your lives shine brightly before them.” (2:15)

Have any of you had the pleasure of meeting a “street preacher”?  Or a team of women that go into troubled neighborhoods, walking the sidewalks and sharing the Word of God?  These people are amazing!  They are a perfect example of having the “Light” of Christ shining in a very dark world.  Even a hardened gang member or destitute street person can be drawn to them, listen to them and soften their hardened exterior for a few moments to be prayed over and told they matter and Jesus loves them.  Can you imagine the impact this has someone who believes they aren’t lovable and are considered a throw away?  Praise God for those beautiful souls who risk their safety doing this amazing work for the Lord.

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…” (2:5)

 As Christians we are to strive to have the mindset of Jesus. And what a beautiful mind it is!

— Jesus had an unselfish attitude.  We are not to live to make a good impression but to care about the interest of others. (2:3,4)

— Jesus had a servant attitude.  Jesus came to earth and took on the form of a servant (2:7), even though Jesus was God in human form.

— Jesus had a sacrificial attitude.  Jesus of course made the ultimate sacrifice, his life!  As believers we are to give of ourselves to help others. Have you ever given the shirt off your back to help someone?  Or put your last $10 in the offering plate?

— Jesus had a humble attitude.  Christ humbled Himself and became obedient.  (2:8)  We are to think of others as better than ourselves. (2:3)

— Jesus had an obedient attitude.  Christ became “obedient to the point of death”. (2:8)  God gives us the desire to obey Him and the power to do what pleases Him. (2:13)

— Jesus had a patient attitude.  We are to endure the difficulties in life and have a willingness to wait for our reward.  Waiting on the Lord renews our strength (Isa. 40:31)

When I was a teenager, my mother had given me a t-shirt that said “I Love My Attitude Problem”.  I use to hear this a lot as a child.   When I was an adolescent, my grand-father would say, “You better get that chip off your shoulder young lady!”.  I would furrow my brow and walk into my bedroom.  Once out my grandfather’s site, I would take my fingers and flick the invisible chip off my shoulder.  I will admit that I still have the “residuals” of an attitude problem.  I’m happy to say my attitude is much better today.

If we have the love of Christ in our hearts, developing a Christ-like attitude isn’t such a daunting feat!  It is something we desire and strive for.  Jesus never said it would be easy being a Christian, but I think as most of us have experienced in life is that anything worthwhile shouldn’t be easy.  Otherwise it loses it’s worth.  So let all of us keep striving to be Christ-like.  Let’s all of us show others the Light of Jesus Christ in our life.  Let’s all of us be unselfish, serve others, give until it hurts, abolish pride, be obedient and practice patience.

Parents of 9/11 victims dying without seeing justice

The wait for justice in the 9/11 court case has gone on for so long that the mothers and fathers who lost children in the terror attacks are dying without ever seeing a trial, according to family members contacted by Fox News. 

The relatives also questioned when they might ever see resolution, with the proceedings dragging on 14 years after the attacks amid predictions a trial may not start until 2020. There have been 14 rounds of pre-trial hearings, and a military judge has scheduled six more for 2016. 

"I am 66 years old. I don't want to die and then my children not see any resolution either," said Lorraine Arias- Beliveau, whose brother Adam Arias died in the attacks. 

Adam Arias was 37 years old when he ran down 84 flights of stairs that day in lower Manhattan, and could be seen at the base of the second tower directing other New Yorkers to safety before he was crushed and killed in the collapse.  

In March, his mother died; his father is nearly 90. Arias- Beliveau, who lives on the Jersey shore, told Fox News the lack of progress is demoralizing, and the presidential candidates should call to bring the 9/11 trial to a conclusion.

"These five [9/11] co-conspirators must be brought to justice and I would like to see this in the new election. And why isn’t it even on the table? Why is it not even a question? How did they forget? You want to lead the country -- everyone swore they wouldn't forget and they forgot!" she said. 

Brad Burlingame, from Los Angeles, Calif., also died earlier this month, of pancreatic cancer. His brother Charles "Chic" Burlingame III was the pilot of Flight 77 and his throat was slashed by the hijackers.   

Their sister Deborah, a consistent advocate for the 9/11 families, emphasized the military commission framework is not the problem, but said military Judge James Pohl shares some of the blame -- for allowing the five 9/11 defendants, including self-described architect Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, to litigate over the right to "pray right there in the courtroom, to wear battle fatigues, to have a softer pillow on the bus drive ... this is jihad in the courtroom and Judge Pohl is letting them get away with it."

New York City firefighter Robert Reeg said President Obama failed to deliver on his promise of swift and certain justice. Instead, the 9/11 families have been "emotionally waterboarded" by the endless delays.  One defense attorney recently told the Associated Press that a trial may not happen until 2020.

"The American public isn't even aware that it's not occuring," Melissa Long told Fox News. Long lost her fiance, a New York City firefighter, in the attack along with close family relatives on one of the flights. "It's a personal struggle to really maintain a balance of moving on with your life (and) at the same time fighting for what's right for what's happened in the past."

At his year-end news conference, Obama once again promised to close the detention camps at Guantanamo Bay, and seemed to see no quick end to the legal process. 

"Some of those folks are going through the military commission process. But there's going to be a challenge there,"  he said.

Obama has not laid out a detailed plan for the 9/11 case, however, if the detention camps are closed. 

“I pledge to you that the nation will never forget, will never lose interest,” Army Brig. Gen. Mark Martins told the AP and a handful of reporters who were at Guantanamo Bay earlier this month. “And your government will continue to pursue justice under law for however long that takes.”

Man found alive after more than 60 hours in China landslide rubble

BEIJING –  A migrant worker was pulled out alive Wednesday after he was buried for more than 60 hours in a massive landslide that swept through part of a major manufacturing city in southern China.

Rao Liangzhong of the Shenzhen Emergency Response Office said that the man, Tian Zeming, was rescued around dawn on Wednesday. He said Tian was from Chongqing in southwestern China.

"The survivor had a very feeble voice and pulse when he was found alive buried under debris, and now he's undergoing further checks," Dr. Wang Yiguo told a news conference in Shenzhen, according to a transcript posted by the district government that covers the area.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that Tian later underwent surgery for a broken hand and on his foot, which had been wedged against a door panel. It said he had been trying to get out of his room when the building collapsed, and the door panel created a space for him to survive.

When they found him, Tian told rescuers his name and that there was another person buried near him, according to the transcript. Another neurosurgeon, Dai Limeng, told the news conference that he had gone into the rubble and confirmed that the second person had not survived.

More than 70 people are still missing from the landslide that happened Sunday when a mountain of construction waste material and mud collapsed and flowed into an industrial park in Shenzhen.

The Ministry of Land and Resources has said a steep man-made mountain of dirt, cement chunks and other construction waste had been piled up against a 100-meter (330-foot) -high hill over the past two years.

Heavy rains saturated the soil, making it heavy and unstable, and ultimately causing it to collapse with massive force in and around an industrial park.

State media reported that the New Guangming District government identified problems with the mountain of soil months earlier.

The Legal Evening News said a district government report in January found that the dump had received 1 million cubic meters of waste and warned of a "catastrophe."

Under pressure from the media, officials allowed about 30 journalists, mostly from foreign outlets, to approach an edge of the disaster area. Flanked by police, reporters could observe military posts with computers and disease control stations set up for the rescue workers.

Shenzhen is a major manufacturing center, making everything from cellphones to cars, and it attracts workers from all parts of China.

Syria conflict: Russia air strikes 'killed 200 civilians'

At least 200 civilians have been killed in Russian air strikes in Syria, an Amnesty International report says, quoting witnesses and activists.

It says it "researched remotely" more than 25 Russian attacks in five areas between 30 September and 29 November.

The findings indicate "serious failures [by Russia] to respect international humanitarian law", Amnesty says.

Moscow has repeatedly denied causing civilian deaths, describing such claims as part of "information warfare".

Russia began air strikes targeting Islamic State militants (IS) and other groups on 30 September, saying it was acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

In the report, Amnesty said it had researched the Russian attacks in Homs, Hama, Idlib, Latakia and Aleppo.

The group said it had "interviewed by phone or over the internet 16 witnesses to attacks and their aftermath", including doctors and human rights activists.

In addition, Amnesty "obtained and reviewed audiovisual imagery" relating to the attacks and "commissioned advice from weapons experts".

The report gives more details about six attacks.

On 29 November, for example, 49 civilians were killed and many others injured when three missiles hit a public market in Ariha, Idlib province, Amnesty said.

It added that testimony by witnesses and research by human rights activists had shown that "there were no military targets in the vicinity".

Amnesty said there was also evidence that Russia's military "unlawfully used unguided bombs in densely populated areas and inherently indiscriminate cluster munitions".

Russian officials have so far made no public comments on the report's accusations.

The Kremlin has previously described similar reports as attempts to discredit its operations in Syria.

President Vladimir Putin said in October that reports of alleged civilian casualties had emerged before the first air strikes were even carried out.

Russia's air campaign comes as a US-led coalition continues its own air strikes against IS targets in Syria.

Islamic State conflict: Ramadi battle enters second day

The battle to drive so-called Islamic State (IS) fighters out of the centre of Ramadi is entering its second day as Iraqi special forces fight the militants street by street.

Officials are optimistic that the city will be recaptured by the weekend.

But a spokesman for the US-led coalition has been more cautious, saying a tough fight is in prospect.

Iraqi forces are heading towards the main government complex, and have come up against snipers and suicide bombers.

Ramadi fell to IS in May in an embarrassing defeat for the Iraqi army.

US-led coalition spokesman Col Steve Warren estimates that there are up to 350 IS fighters still in Ramadi in addition to possibly tens of thousands of civilians.

There have been reports that IS has been rounding people up, possibly to use as human shields.

How tactical change boosted offensive

BBC Middle East editor Sebastian Usher says that the offensive in Ramadi appears to be a more effective Iraqi military operation, helped by months of US training.

Notable by their absence, our correspondent says, are powerful Shia militias, who helped recapture Tikrit earlier this year.

Their presence would be too incendiary in the Sunni heartland of Ramadi and the surrounding province of Anbar, he adds.

Security sources told the BBC troops and allied tribesmen, backed by US-led air strikes, had already retaken two districts, and entered two others.

Last month, government forces completed their encirclement of the predominantly Sunni Arab city, about 90km (55 miles) west of Baghdad, cutting off militants inside the centre from strongholds elsewhere in Anbar province and in neighbouring Syria.

Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service spokesman Sabah al-Numani said its troops, supported by soldiers, police and Sunni tribesmen, began the assault on central Ramadi at dawn on Tuesday.

Sources in the Iraqi military's Anbar Operations Command told the BBC that engineers had built temporary bridges over the River Euphrates, which flows along the north and west of the city centre.

This had enabled troops to enter directly the al-Haouz district, south-west of the government complex.

By Tuesday afternoon, government forces had retaken the al-Thubat and al-Aramil districts, and entered nearby al-Malaab and Bakir, the sources said.

The Iraqi defence ministry said the jihadists had prevented civilians leaving Ramadi since leaflets warning of an assault were dropped over the city last month.

Sources inside Ramadi told the BBC IS had carried out a campaign of raids and mass arrests of residents in districts still under its control, in an attempt to prevent an uprising in support of the government offensive.

IS has lost control of several key towns in Iraq to government and Kurdish forces since overrunning large swathes of the country's west and north in June 2014 and proclaiming the creation of a "caliphate" that also extended into neighbouring Syria.

On Monday, analysis by IHS Jane's suggested that IS had lost 14% of its overall territory in Iraq and Syria, about 12,800 sq km (4,940 sq miles), over the past year.

Despite this, the group has been able to capture new territory of strategic value over the same period, including Ramadi and Palmyra in Syria's Homs province. It also still controls the Iraqi cities of Falluja, east of Ramadi, and Mosul, in the north.

What is Islamic State?

A notoriously violent Islamist group which controls large parts of Syria and Iraq. It has declared its territory a caliphate - a state governed in accordance with Islamic law - under its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

What does it want?

IS demands allegiance from all Muslims, rejects national borders and seeks to expand its territory. It adheres to its own extreme interpretation of Sunni Islam and regards non-believers as deserving of death.

How strong is IS?

IS projects a powerful image, partly through propaganda and sheer brutality, and is the world's richest insurgent group. It has about 30,000 fighters but is facing daily bombing by a US-led multinational coalition which has vowed to destroy it.

The Enugu State command says it has arrested three notorious kidnappers at their various hideouts in Lagos and 9th mile, Enugu state. The suspects on November 21, abducted a victim now deceased, identified as Ekene Okonkwo (decomposed body pictured after the cut) from Affa in udi Local LGA from Affa road on his way home from a traditional marriage in his vehicle. 

 

They demanded for the sum of ten million naira ransom from the victim/deceased relations. The victim was denied food for seven days and brutally beaten. On realising that their victim has died, they abandoned the corpse and fled to an unknown destination.

In its renewed onslaught against crime and criminality,the Enugu state command of the Nigeria Police Force through its operatives of the Anti Kidnap Unit of the command recently trailed and encountered notorious suspected kidnappers at their various hideout in lagos and 9thmile Enugu state.

It was gathered suspects identified as Ekene Nwankwo from Okposi in Ebonyi state but staying in Fijiso Epe Lagos and 9thmile corner respectively,Emeka Igwe from Awka Etiti as well as Chidi Agu had allegedly conspired together with one Ebuka from Ameke Ngwo in Udi Local government Area of Enugu state and abducted with their gun a victim now deceased and identified as one Ekene Okonkwo from Affa in udi Local Government Area from Affa road on 21/11/15 as he was returning from a traditional marriage with his vehicle and took him to a nearby bush by old Nsukka Abor Road 9thmile corner Enugu where they tied his hands and legs with rope and demanded for the sum of ten million naira ransom from the victim/deceased relations.They also denied him food and water for seven days after beating him while in captivity.It was further gathered that this however made him to be weak and as a result died inside the bush.Suspects who were with the victim on noticing that their victim has died,abandoned the corpse and fled to an unknown destination.

Operatives of the Anti Kidnapping Unit of the command in their investigations launched attack on suspects at their hideout in 9thmile and lagos respectively which left suspects fatally injured during a shoot out that ensued..According to one of the suspects Ekene Nwakwo,it was their burning search to make quick money that landed them into the trouble as they variously contacted a Native Doctor for money making and the native Doctor will always tell them to get some money to buy things for rituals and no money hence they had to go that way.He further revealed that their victim was coming back from traditional marriage around 7pm at Affa road near 9th mile when Ebuka communicated them that the victim was approaching before they blocked the road and picked up with their gun to the bush and abandoning his tundra jeep.He further revealed that the victim later died after few days of holding him captive.Chidi Agu one of the suspects confirmed that their victims would not have died if not that Ekene tied him seriously to avoid attacking them back or overpowering them.He attributed his membership of the gang due to frustrations and pleaded for forgiveness even as he regretted that their victim died.

To one of the suspects Emeka Igwe,he did not waste time to disclose that they are four in numbers that planned the kidnapping in order to raise money.He mentioned himself,Ekene Nwankwo the gang leader,Chidi Agu and Ebuka now at large.He however regretted their action and prayed for forgiveness while attributing the circumstance that led them into the mess as unfortunate.Meanwhile a full scale investigations have been intensified into the incident just as the dead body of the victim has been recovered inside the bush by the operatives and deposited at the nearby hospital for necessary action.

Four members of a gang, including a Nigerian jailed over robbery of a London jewellers

On Friday, December 11, a 17-year-old boy and four men were jailed at Woolwich Crown Court for more than 30 years in total after being convicted of conspiracy to rob. Michael Ogun, 22, of Poppy Drive, Enfield, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment.

Thomas O’Connor, 23, of Swan Lane, Southwark, maintained his innocence but was jailed for eight-and-a-half years. Jamie Hull, 21, of Tranton Road, Southwark, was also found guilty and was jailed for eight years.

 

Gary O’Brien, 22, of Brunel Road, Southwark, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four-and-a-half years’ imprisonment.

The four men on October 9, 2014, battered the shop window of an east London jewelry store, Attenborough Jewellers, on Bethnal Green Road, with sledgehammers as frightened staff and onlookers looked on in shock. (screen grab of the robbery below)

CCTV shows the shutter falling shut to keep out the robbers but not before one was able to reach in and grab Rolex watches and jewellery worth £12,000, police said. The four men then made off using three motorcyles.

A 17-year-old boy from Southwark, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve three years in a youth detention centre. 

 

Police believe other may have been involved with the incident and enquiries continue to trace them, Scotland Yard said.

The Met praised members of the public who aided the enquiry by reporting relevant discoveries and observations to the police. One person found a backpack containing clothing, which had been weighed down with bricks, on the Thames shore near Rotherhithe Street, Southwark.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Andy McGuire, of the Met’s Flying Squad, said:

     "This is the perfect example of how members of the public reporting what may seem to be insignificant things can actually help police crack a case. This was an aggressive robbery which left store staff shaken and onlookers terrified, but thanks to the quick reactions of local officers, information from the public and team work across the Met, these men are now in prison."

Fuel price to revert to N97 as FG plans gradual removal of fuel subsidy in 2016

The Federal government has indicated plans to gradually remove fuel subsidy by 2016. This was made known by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu while appearing before the Joint National Assembly Committee on Finance, Appropriation and National Planning yesterday Dec. 14.

During his interaction with the senators, Kachukwu, stated that the subsidy regime which was at over N1 trillion in 2015 was no longer be sustainable.

He said the plan was to gradually remove the subsidy by first reverting to the old pump price of N97 per litre

“The government doesn't need to fund subsidy. There is energy around the removal of subsidy. Most Nigerians we talk to today would say, that's where to go. I have since left the dictionary of subsidy by going to price modulation, which is a bit more technical. Price of refined products today is N87. It was N97 before it was removed and we really have to go back to that because we don't really have the finance to remove it. There are lots of safety barometer between the N87 and N97 per litre regime between which government does not have to fund subsidy. Yet the prices would be fairly close to what it used to be today. That is the first mechanism we are going to work on. It is when that mechanism fails that we will begin to look at a total subsidy exit. We believe we could achieve that."he said

I never gave Dasuki N40billion donation - Sanusi

All these accusations and counter-accusations is beginning to get worrisome. Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II has denied claims that he gave the office of the embattled former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki N40 billion while he served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He denied the claims in an interview with The Cable...

“This is completely untrue. In the first place, I understand the laws of money laundering. And it is a criminal offence. The central bank is the chief regulator charged with ensuring we put an end to money laundering. This is partly why we started our cashless Nigeria project and why I started the BVN project. I would never authorize that amount of cash to be moved to the office of the NSA or to anyone even if it was in their account.
I do not know where they are getting these strange stories. I was removed from the CBN in February 2014, and to the best of my knowledge, the EFCC is probing disbursements allegedly made made in late 2014 and early 2015 before the general elections, if indeed they happened. I find it difficult to believe that this could happen in the CBN that I know but we have to wait and see what the investigations come out with. Certainly whoever is linking me to this did not even bother to look at the dates of the alleged transactions. I know nothing about them, period. We never gave cash to anybody. If we did we disclosed it in published accounts under CSR. Our interventions, be this to educational institutions or security services, took the form of clearly identified projects or specified procurement, done through well laid-down procedures, including competitive bidding, award of contracts, and collection of no-objection certificate from the due process office. We did not give cash to anybody. The total amount disbursed by the CBN on capital projects in my five years was N55 billion. And this included contracts for CBN branches and our CSR interventions mainly in the universities and secondary schools. How can anyone suggest that we gave N40 billion to ONSA?” he said

15-year-old boy beats 26 year old neighbour to death

The police in Lagos have arrested a 15-year-old boy, Sodiq Isa, for allegedly beating his 26 year old neighbour, Johnson Adeboye, to death with a stick.

It was learnt that Adeboye had  complained that Sodiq was making a noise with a plate, Sodiq insulted the deceased which led to a fight and Sodiq allegedly beat the deceased to death with a stick.

The incident happened on December 5th on Townhall Street in the Amukoko area of Lagos. The suspect said Adeboye, a Keke Marwa (tricycle) driver had attacked him first.

He narrated:

“I was returning from Arabic school at about 5pm that day. The plate I used in taking food to school fell from my hands. I picked it up and went to a shop close by to clean it up.

“There was a table in front of the shop; so, I hit the plate on the table to remove the sand inside the plate. Johnson (Adeboye) was in front of the shop, and he told me that I was making a noise with it.

“I told him I was only trying to clean up the sand in the plate. He asked me if I was mad, that why should I be talking to him like that. I responded and told him I was not mad. He warned me that if I continued to talk back at him, he would beat me up. I ignored his threat and walked home.”

He added that the victim followed him home and continued the threat.

He said his grandma, who was at home at the time, asked him what the matter was.

“Johnson came from behind and started beating me. Some people around separated us and he left, but he returned some minutes later to assault me again.

“People separated us for the second time, but he went to call one of his friends. Both of them started assaulting me.

“It was at this point that I felt the urge to defend myself. I picked a stick on the ground and hit Johnson on the head. Immediately, he fell and became unconscious. Neighbours gathered and rushed him to the hospital. But it was too late as he was already dead,” he added.

The suspect, who said he wanted to be an Islamic cleric, begged for forgiveness, saying it was not his intention to kill the deceased.

 

Sodia has since been arrested by policemen from the Amukoko division but has been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.

 

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the incident. He said the  investigations were ongoing.
